Kias second litter was born on Saturday 22 September. Like her first
litter she ignored the pups. The first time I left the pups with Kia too
long – hoping shed nurse them. We lost them all. There
were only two pups in Kias second litter. After 12 hours I checked them.
One was already dead, the other cold and dehydrated and no milk band to be
seen. I took a deep breath and decided to try and hand raise the pup. I was
very pessimistic about the pups chances because it hadnt had any of
Mums first milk and was already cold and dehydrated. The pup is a female
and shes made it!
The pup, named Kukurika, is now seven
weeks old and she is more-or-less weaned. She doesnt need it but
shes very reluctant to give up her formula. As shes without any
siblings or Mummy shes still enjoying supplementary heat.
You can see day-by-day development development pictures in the album and also watch a
seven minute compilation video of Kukurika feeding when she was
two weeks old.
Admist all the joy of the new pup Ive handed back her parents, Ollie
and Kia, who have been fostered to me for over a year now. Although I knew they
would go back one day but it was very hard to part with them. My time will to be
devoted solely to Kukurika now.
